The Breitling Emergency watch, popular with explorers and adventurers, was originally designed for pilots and aircrews and has a built in micro-transmitter which broadcasts on the 121.5 MHz aircraft emergency frequency. Amazingly, the Breitling Emergency watch has saved an impressive 21 lives. Following an emergency situation, the user would unscrew the cap and pull out the antennae to start transmitting the emergency signal that rescuers can home in on. The watch has a 48 hour broadcast time and a range of 100 miles over flat terrain or calm seas.

The Emergency watch distress signal is related to the beacons carried aboard aircraft; technically the watch doesn’t actually trigger an alert but instead is used to help locate people in distress. In February 2009 COSPAS-SARSAT decided to phase out the 121.5 MHz emergency frequency satellite processing service for distress signals.  The Breitling Emergency watch, in common with man overboard systems and homing transmitters, will not be affected by this change and the watch remains a powerful tool for search and rescue.

The Breitling Emergency watch is available in many different variations, including yellow gold, white gold and titanium, with a choice of leather, crocodile, ocean racer and diver pro straps available. I should also mention that this watch has a water resistance of 30m when the transmitter is in operation. The watches possess Super Quartz chronograph movement, with the exception of the white gold model which uses thermo-compensated electronic chronograph movement. As well as the transmitter, this Breitling watch has a bidirectional bezel consisting of a compass scale and digital day and date programmed for 4 years.

I think you would have to agree that overall this Breitling, is an extremely impressive timepiece. This is demonstrated by its celebrity fans, which include, Tom Cruise, Mark Beaumont and most famously “born survivor” Bear Grylls. Most recently Mark Beaumont, better known as “the man who cycled the world”, has taken on a new mission, involving rowing across the Atlantic in record times. Mark endured specialised training, in not only stamina and strength, but in how to get the most out of his Breitling Emergency watch
