The first Submariner watch that Rolex produced was shown at the Basel watch fair in 1954 and went on general release later that year. The Submariner has been in constant production ever since this date and expanded over the years from a simple Stainless Steel model to the Bi-metal (Stainless steel and 18ct carat gold) and a full 18ct yellow gold model, only as recently as 2008 have Rolex introduced an 18ct white gold 116619LB Rolex Submariner with the new ceramic bezel and stronger/wider horns/shoulders.
The Rolex Submariner very quickly became an iconic watch and it’s popularity was assured when Ian Fleming dressed his fictional British Secret Service agent James Bond with a Submariner. Indeed Sean Connery and the first three Bond’s on film all wore Rolex Submariner’s it was only the dawn of commercialisation that saw the Bond on film change to an Omega SeaMaster.

For the next forty year the Rolex Submariner has been gradually upgraded with advancements and investments in equipment by Rolex Geneva, with new movements, improved water resistance capabilities and smaller cosmetic changes to the dial and bezel, however the current model continues to bear a very strong resemblance to the 5512 or 5513 models of the early 1960s, the current 16610 is an unmistakable close relation to the very first Rolex Submariners introduced more than fifty years ago.
In 2003 Rolex commemorated the 50th Anniversary of the Submariner collection with the introduction of a special commemorative green bezel, (Green being Rolex’s house colour) 16610LV. Ever since this date we have expected Rolex to withdraw their Green bezel 16610LV model and perhaps the anticipated introduction of a new cased 16610 Steel submariner will see it’s demise, no doubt making it yet another highly collectable model.

For those who prefer their sports watches with a hint of a dress element the Rolex Submariner 16613 stainless steel and 18ct yellow gold model with a choice of black or royal blue dial and bezel should appeal. The blue of the 16613 Submariner has always been a much stronger seller than the Black dial and bezel 16613 model.
In 2008 Rolex released the latest version of the Submariner with heavier case and shoulders and with the new ceramic bezel. However this new design has so far only been released in 18ct yellow gold (116618) Black bezel; and for the first time in 18ct white gold (116619LV) with a new Blue ceramic bezel. The bezel is produced by an exclusive Rolex process, heated to 1000 degrees, virtually indestructible and impervious to scratches, it takes more than forty hours to produce each of these bezels. All Submariner date watches are water resistant to 1000 feet.
The current Submariner collection consists of the following models:
