For centuries, the pearl has been widely regarded as a high class gem that displayed the wealth of the wearer better than any other stone. The ancient Egyptians were buried with them, the knights of the Dark Ages wore them into battle and the Renaissance nobility forbade the lower classes from wearing them. Pearls are unique due to the fact that they are the only gem that comes from a creature rather than the earth. Pearls are created when a foreign object finds its way into the shell of an oyster, which then proceeds to protect itself by secreting layer upon layer of a smooth and hard substance known as ‘nacre’. A cultured pearl is still created in this way, but the foreign object is introduced by pearl farmers in order to create the gem.
