For the Gents Watch of the Week, we are proud to present the Omega Speedmaster Z-33 Spacemaster. Indisputably the most distinctive timepiece yet to be featured on Watch of the Week, the Z-33 Spacemaster is, quite simply, utterly unique. This is a watch that was never intended to conform to the accepted form for Swiss luxury watches, but is instead an audaciously contemporary development from Omega that has proven beyond doubt that they remain one of the driving forces behind horological innovation.
The Z-33 Spacemaster was heavily influenced by the famously traditional Omega X-33 ‘Pilot Line’ case shape, although its fearlessly futuristic aesthetics remain in an incomparable sphere of their own. The analogue hands of the watch orbit above the dial, and can be easily adjusted by the primary crown situated at 3 o’clock on the case side. This is not an inconspicuous watch, and its 43mm diameter and 10mm depth combine to make the Z-33 Spacemaster the undeniable focus of any watch related discussion.
Looking as if it would be perfectly at home on the set of a science fiction movie, the instantly recognisable case of the Spacemaster is formed from lightweight grade 5 titanium, and the construction of the double caseback has been deliberately targeted to amplify the resonance of the internal alarm. So finely finished is the titanium case of the Spacemaster that the iconic Omega logo, and accompanying ‘Speedmaster’ inscription, almost seems to float against the brushed, polished and sandblasted finishes of the 30 metre water resistant case.
The Spacemaster is fitted with a scratch resistant anti-reflective crystal to allow all of its functions to be observed without hindrance. The LCD screen on this timepiece is eminently unusual for a luxury watch, yet it transcends most digital displays through the possession of a LED backlight that automatically adapts to ambient levels of light, and enables night time legibility of impressive clarity. The use of Super LumiNova on many details of the dial enhance the readability of the timepiece still further, and the subtle green hue that these elements exude is a further combatant against low light conditions. A simple push of the relevant crown also positions the analogue hands away from the LCD display, allowing it to be even further unobstructed.
Powered by an Omega Calibre 5666 thermo-compensated multi-function quartz movement, the highly precise timekeeping of the Z-33 Spacemaster is always held in perfect order, and the power reserve on this movement can last for a staggering full years if necessary. Far more accurate than a standard quartz movement, this high specification model is accurate to an astonishing 10 seconds a year. With a black or brown leather strap augmented with decorative crimson inscriptions and an Omega emblazoned folding clasp, the Spacemaster is all about making a statement, whilst also remaining peerlessly practical. 20013 has also seen Omega release a titanium bracelet for the Spacemaster, so the range of possible options is certainly worthy of note.
The Spacemaster is no ordinary timepiece, and so it boasts a full range of specialist functions. UTC time capabilities under twin time zones are able to be utilised by the owner of a Z-33 Spacemaster, as well as the aforementioned alarm and a full calendar. Practicing pilots are capable of self programming up to 10 of their airborne exploits into the wristwatches log book, and Omega have succeeded in developing a system that allows two ‘favourite’ functions to be assigned to a single crown pusher. With a chronograph function and a dedicated countdown timer to measure elapsed time, no calculation is beyond the scope of this avant-garde timepiece.
Continuing the twin traditions of reliability and innovation that have always typified Omega watches, the Speedmaster Z-33 Spacemaster is an adventurous wristwatch that has been created in close union with qualified pilots to better cement its particular appeal. At Banks Lyon the Spacemaster is available to own for a 10% deposit and 24 monthly payments of £139.50.
