Omega's Support of Solar Powered Aviation

Since May 2007 Omega has been heavily involved in the Solar Impulse project, a project whereby two engineers are attempting to create a plane that can circumnavigate the earth using solar power alone. In 2009 the project produced a solar powered plane that flew at both night and day time, proving the feasibility of the project.

Omega's Special Edition Solar Impulse Commemorates Their Involvement in the Project

Representatives and engineers from Omega have been deeply involved with the team in developing the engine that will power the airplane and also in the development of the system test bench which will be used while testing the components to the Sonar Impulse airplane. As well as this, Omega has obviously publicised the project lending their brand name to the project, a brand name that is recognised the world over as one that is associated with quality and efficiency.

As a commemoration of the partnership and the 2009 success of the maiden voyage of the Solar Impulse Airplane, Omega has released a special edition watch. The Omega Solar Impulse HB SIA is the watch in question and it is a stylish, modern looking watch that is similar in its design to many of Omega’s established watches, bearing a particular resemblance to a more modern version of the Omega Speedmaster Professional Moon Watch, with a modern carbon fibre face and stylish design on the hands.

Omega’s involvement in the Solar Impulse project not only shows the brand’s continued interest in the development of technology, but also their interest in protecting the environment, as if the project proves successful it shows that solar power may be a viable way to power aircraft in the future.
