When we think of luxury watches the last thing people think of are LCD displays, but in 1973 it was just that which was setting the luxury watch market alight. The early 70s were an exciting time for watch technology. Not only were battery powered watches readily available, but the first quartz models were being released, based upon using the vibrations of a quartz crystal to keep time. However, it was Longines who at that time stole a march on the rest of the market with the very first liquid crystal
display (LCD) wrist watch.
This exciting item could be yours for the princely sum of $300 as it was launched in the USA, which would be north of £900 in today’s money, and at the time must have seemed like something straight out of a science fiction magazine. It is a clear indicator of how far technology has come (and perhaps how much we take it for granted) since then that a simple LCD wrist watch can be had for under a fiver if you shop around, although you can guarantee you won’t find a Longines watch for that kind of price.
There are still many top brands which incorporate digital LCD displays in to their new models, such as with the Professional range of Breitling watches, but the luxury market as a whole nowadays tends to avoid the dull browns and greens of LCD screens in favour of more elegant aesthetics. The retro and alternative fashion markets, however, have seen a boom in demand for LCD watches over the last couple of years, whether in the clumsy original styles of the black plastic 80s or in updated interpretations of designs used in other well known electronic devices. A perfect example of how yesterday's discarded fad can return to be the hottest must-have accessory of tomorrow.

Roses are red, Violets are blue, I haven’t got a date for Valentine’s Day yet, So I guess you’ll do.Sometimes it can be hard coming up with Valentine’s Day messages for the object of your desire without sounding either completely contrived or giving your sweetheart the wrong idea. Even if you do get the tone right, there is every chance it will be taken out of context by the recipient, and the only thing as unfortunate as turning off someone you like is overly enticing someone you don’t. So what’s the plan? A sensible person would forgo the whole awkward ritual, and many relationships observe an uneasy Valentine’s Day card truce over this period each year, but for those still in the throes of the chase there is always an expectation, exacerbated by the paranoia that a rival suitor may take the opportunity to chance their hand. For most, the only solution is to trust in the Gods of Hallmark and cruise the aisles of your local supermarkets for an overpriced card that you think will mean substantially more to its recipient than the £3.50 you’re planning to spend on it. Of course, much like actions speaking louder than words, gifts speak louder than silly messages in cards, and as far as Valentine’s Day gifts go, something like a Cartier watch doesn’t so much speak as scream. Admittedly, you would need to be fairly lavish to send out Cartier watches willy-nilly to anyone who took your fancy down the pub last Friday, so they aren’t suitable for every situation, but for the right person you are almost guaranteed a return on the investment. Another advantage of Cartier watches is that there won't be a silly poem in sight. |

Breitling watches were first established in 1884 when Leon Brietling opened his workshop in Switzerland, creating luxury timepieces for professional timekeeping. By 1936 a relationship with the Royal Airforce had been set up, marking the start of a longstanding cooperation with international aviation.
An old Breitling Poster
The Montbrillant Datora Limited Edition watch in 18ct Rose Gold is part if the Breitling Navitimer family, and draws its inspiration from a grand era in history, the 1940’s, as a tribute to a bestselling watch. The most distinguishing feature about this Breitling Montbrillant watch is the way in which it displays the date. The calendar displays both the day and the month through the side apertures, while a half moon centre pointer indicates the date. This is famously called the slide rule and is a feature on all of Breitling Navitimer watches.
An example of the slide rule
In addition to this indispensible function, this Breitling watch has a tachometer a 1/100th of an hour indicator and a second display shows 24 hour or military time. Also, the timezones of the of the world’s major cities are engraved on the caseback of the watch. This Breitling Montbrillant Datora has a self winding mechanical movement and a 42 hour power reserve.
The limited edition version of this Navitimer Datora has been made in 18ct rose gold and has a reasonably large case size at 43mm. It is currently available on a leather strap or a Navitimer bracelet and is only water resistant up to 30 meters. As with all Breitling Montbrillant watches, cambered sapphire crystal, which has been glareproofed on both sides has been used to make the functions on the watch dial easier to view.

Omega Seamaster watches date all the way back to 1932, although they weren’t actually given the name “Seamaster†until 1947. Up until the 60’s Seamaster watches had few functions, other than to display the time and date and were commonly worn as a dress watch as appose to a sports watch. During the 1970’s Seamaster watches took a much sportier look and came with more diver watch orientated features, such as higher water resistance, calibrated rotating bezels, high visibility dials and chronograph functions.Â

Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 2200.50
Now in 2009, the Omega Seamaster 300m co-axial and the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean range of watches are amongst the most popular on the luxury watch market. Both of these Seamaster watches are famous for featuring in James Bond films and both have had a limited edition James Bond 007 models released. Similar features in both these watches are the uni rotational divers bezel, the domed anti reflective, scratch resistant sapphire crystal and the stainless steel case.

Omega Seamaster 300m 212.30.36.20.01.001
Each of these watches also boasts a helium escape valve, a decompression system which allows helium to escape inside the watch when the it is worn professionally, for example in compression chambers, long underwater work and crude oil exploration. The Seamaster 300m and the Seamaster Planet Ocean have a screw in crown for the high water resistance of each watch. The Seamaster Planet Ocean however, has a water resistance of 600m, which is much higher than the Seamaster 300m which has, not surprisingly a 300m water resistance.

The Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean James Bond Watch
The water resistant of these watches is not the only difference between them. The Planet Ocean watch has a slightly larger case size at 45mm then the 300m Seamaster at 41mm. Although this doesn’t seem much of a difference in size at 4mm in each, it can make all the difference when being worn on the wrist. However the Co Axial escapement movement is used in both these watches .

Omega Co Axial Escapement Movement
The Co Axial escapement is used in conjunction with a free sprung balance and has the benefits of reduced friction and increased stability. George Daniels, who invented the Co Axial Escapement movement says that he invented this movement to “sustain the public affection for the mechanical watch during the 21st centuryâ€. It maintains oscillations of the balance regarding the watches mechanism, this gives a watch a reduced need for servicing and greater precision over time.

In 1847 Louis-Francois Cartier took over the workshop of Adolphe Picard in Paris and quickly transformed the business in to an overnight success. By 1859, business was booming and the first Cartier shop was opened. In 1904 Louis Cartier designed the first modern, ultra-flat wrist watch, casting a shadow over the timepieces of the previous century and consigning them to watch making history. Shortly after this time in 1906, the Cartier Tonneau watch was born, the first watch to have a vaulted case to perfectly fit the curve of the wrist. This was followed some time later by the Cartier Tank watch, which was inspired by the allied tanks that liberated France. To this day, Cartier still produces these models through numerous interpretations displaying modern features and functions. Each Cartier watch is made with a blend of creativity and desire and encompasses highly complicated techniques.
Cartier watches are recognizable worldwide with their punctuated legendary creations. The Cartier Santos watch is easily identifiable along with the sporty Cartier Pasha watch. The Pasha Cartier watch was primarily a man’s watch until the 1980’s when it became a sought after fashion accessory for women. However, this watch actually dates back to the early 1930’s when the Pasha of Marrakech’s desire for a waterproof watch. He asked Cartier to design a watch that he could wear while in his pool. The watch features a large round face and is elegant yet solidly constructed.

In contrast, the Santos de Cartier watches stemmed from a friend of Louis Cartier, Alberto Santos-Dumont who was an early aviation pioneer. He needed a more suitable wristwatch for his dare devil flights and so the Santos watch range was born. The Cartier Santos 100 Carbon watch range released in 2009 features sophisticated sword shaped hands and is also available in rose gold which is becoming very fashionable as of late. Almost the opposite of this is the Cartier Demoiselle watch, also from the Santos range, a small timepiece which shows exquisite geometric form with round corners displaying beautiful workmanship and classic Cartier sophistication.

The delicate jewellery style Cartier watches, such as the Cartier Tank Francaise watch and the Cartier Tank Americaine watch, with their strong lines are all equally celebrated. These watches are classics which are the reason for their success. Now, well into the 21st century, Cartier has made successful aesthetic changes, such as the La Dona De Cartier watch, produced in memory of Maria Felix a Mexican star. The links on the watches strap, which imitate the skin of a crocodile, are inspired by a similar necklace which the actress ordered from Cartier in 1975. The Cartier Roadster watches are inspired by the world of automobile design and capture the feeling of power and performance with the simple yet attractive design. The most distinguishing feature about this watch is the Cyclops lens that magnifies the date and interchangeable straps and bracelets. They are modern yet classic with a self-winding movement.
Cartier Roadster Small Watch - W652026Y4
The Cartier Must 21 watch is another contemporary watch with three counters on the dial and roman numerals that revolve around a fixed bezel. The Cartier Ronde watch collection are larger models with steel circular grained crowns set with spinel cabochon. The watch features both roman and Arabic numerals and sleek sword shaped hands. The opposite watch to this is the Cartier Baignoire watch which is an elegant feminine watch possessing clean lines and roman numerals. Cartier looks to the future with the Ballon Bleu de Cartier Range of watches, as the case and dial are distinguished by a bulbous distortion in shape. Interestingly each watch incorporates solid gold into the design; there is no stainless steel only model. Cartier is the name of luxury and quality and boasts a large selection of designs and functionalities and is currently rumoured to be number one seller of luxury jewellery in the world!

In 1884, Leon Breitling opened a workshop in Switzerland specialising in creating time pieces for industry and science. In 1915 the first wristwatch chronograph was manufactured to provide pilots with accurate and professional timekeeping. By 1936 Breitling had become the official supplier to the Royal Airforce, marking the start of a longstanding cooperation with international aviation.

This year (2009) Breitling is celebrating 125 years of expertise and dedication to watch making. Breitling watches demonstrate excellence and are all geared to be “instruments for professionalsâ€. Breitling watches play an active role in aviation, sports, technology, science and industry, all requiring accurate and reliable time measurement equipment. Breitling manufacture a large and diverse collection of watches to suit all tastes.
There are 4 main families of Breitling watches, one being the Breitling Navitimer watch range. The Navitimer watches were originally launched in 1952, including the Breitling Cosmonaute watch, Breitling Montbrillant watch and the Breitling Chrono-matic watch. The Breitling Navitimer is a favourite with pilots worldwide. The watch is endowed with a built in “navigation computerâ€; a slide rule capable of performing all the calculations a flight plan needs. Since the 806 model released in 1952 the Breitling Navitimer has remained unchanged in both form and spirit and is now the world’s oldest chronograph watch.Â

The models in the Breitling Windrider watches line have inherited their style from the Breitling Chronomat watch, one of the most popular Breitling watches. The Breitling Cockpit watch, Breitling Starliner watch and Breitling Blackbird watch all stem from the Windrider collection. Developed for an elite flight team of the Italian air force, The Breitling Chronomat watch is self winding and has been described as possibly the world’s most reliable movement as it is propelled by the Breitling Calibre 13. The Breitling Cockpit watch has been built to withstand pressures of 1000ft, and at the same time has been designed to be a sturdy and functional timepiece.

The Breitling Professional watches are specifically tailored to the world of aviation. The Breitling Emergency watch contains built-in Micro transmitter broadcasting in the 121.5MHz aircraft SOS frequency. The Breitling Airwolf watch is equipped with a turbine shaped construction on the case back, which serves as a resonance chamber for the audible indications, including the alarm function. Another watch to mention from the Professional Collection would be the Breitling Skyracer Watch which contains the new Calibre 27 movement, which exclusively enables dual visualisation of measured times. Finally the Breitling Co-Pilot watch certainly lives up to its name with its user friendly functions, including automatic chronograph activation on takeoff separate display modes for different time zones.

And finally, the Breitling Aeromarine watches, the largest of the 4 watch families. All of the watches in this range meet the strictest Breitling criteria in terms of sturdiness and reliability. These watches are intended for a variety of users who are looking for a high performance time piece, whatever the circumstances. The Breitling Super Avenger watch has a generous dial size at 48.40 millimeters yet is a comfortable fit on the wrist and is also powered by the most tried and tested movement assembled by Breitling, the Calibre 13. The Breitling Superocean watch has had an excellent reputation among divers since 1957. This watch is distinguished by its excellent readability which is enhanced by sapphire crystal that has been glare-proofed on both sides. Performance and reliability are of the up most importance for the Breitling Chrono Colt watch, with the chronograph version being the most elaborate. This watch enables measurements of short times as well as fast time zone changes without altering the running of the second hand and the minute hand.Â

The first man landed on the Moon on 20th July 1969 and this historic event generally regarded as one of the human race’s crowning scientific achievements. When Buzz Aldrin set foot onto the Moon’s surface, he was wearing an Omega Speedmaster watch. 40 years later in 2009, Omega is celebrating the Anniversary of the first Moon landing in style, with the release of the . Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Apollo 11 40th Anniversary Limited Edition Watch.
Â
Â
Â
Â
Â
To prove this watches endurance, before the moon landing expedition in 1965, five different brands of chronographs were purchased “off the shelf†and taken to NASA for testing. Amazingly the Speedmaster passed NASA’s numerous tests including exposure to extreme temperatures, intense humidity, vacuum, shock, corrosion, pressure, acceleration, noise and vibration, whereas other well known brands failed in these areas.
Â
Noteably, this watch was most useful on the failed Apollo 13 mission in 1970. When all of the on board computers and failed, the only way that the crew could make accurate timings was through their wristwatches. If the Omega Speedmaster had not been accurate the outcome of that mission could have been very different indeed.
