The History of IWC Portofino Watches

Introduced in 1984 as a wristwatch in ‘pocket watch style’, IWC Portofino watches have been refined to perfection over the last three decades to become one of the brand’s most beloved collections, with an intrinsic sense of laid-back style that attracts both ladies and gentlemen alike.

The clarity of the design and the uncluttered aesthetic of the dial within the range of IWC Portofino watches is a firm favourite with many, and this sense of minimalism is now the hallmark of the collection. With Roman numerals and simple hour markers, along with a case design that can trace an unbroken lineage all the way back to the Lépine pocket watch of 1984, this is a family of watches that remains timeless, and probably always will.

When Classical Meets Contemporary

However, 'timeless' doesn’t mean that IWC Portofino watches lack the innovations of modern horology, as there are plenty of innovations on display.

Some of the features exhibited by select models include moon phase displays, a power reserve of 8 days from the IWC Portofino Hand Wound Eight Days line, and GMT functions for those owners who regularly cross into different time zones. Aesthetically, they have often embraced the modern affiliation with diamond-set bezels too, yet have never left their roots behind. The reverse of selected Portofino cases celebrates their Mediterranean heritage, with an engraving of a Ligurian fishing village depicted in magical detail: the very name 'Portofino' comes from an Italian fishing village, after all.

IWC Portofino automatic watches and IWC Portofino chronographs have earned a reputation among watch lovers as reliable, beautiful, precision-made items.

Another characteristic of IWC Portofino watches has always been their large case size, and indeed they were considered unusually large at the time when they were first released.

However, some years ago IWC Schaffhausen elected to create variant Portofino watches that were a little smaller, which is just one of the reasons why these timepieces will suit both male and female watches so well. These smaller dials possess all of the same signature flourishes of the larger, even in the case of the 37mm moon phase watch, which still includes the whimsical inclusion of a cloud scene emblem.

If you'd prefer a larger watch with the same excellent engineering and competent design engineer, consider the IWC Pilots Watch range.

IWC Portofino FAQs

What Makes the IWC Portofino the Perfect Everyday Watch?

One of the most desirable aspects of the IWC Portofino watch collection is that it appeals to everybody. It was introduced in 1984 and has undergone a range of facelifts and technological advancements over the decades, expanding its appeal to extend to a range of new audiences. For example, when IWC first launched the collection, they brought out a choice of sizes, including smaller dials catered to those with smaller wrists. Although all watch sizes are now viewed as unisex, these smaller dials were initially introduced for women.

In addition to their broad appeal due to sizing, their sleek and elegant design also makes them desirable, especially for everyday wear. All models in this collection come with the same classic round dial in a choice of durable metals. This timelessly elegant design choice is uncluttered, with sleek Roman numerals and simple hour markers, making it suitable for an everyday watch that can be matched with any outfit or personal style.

Alongside this, another factor that makes the IWC Portofino a perfect everyday watch is that it is renowned for its comfort. Although there is a choice of strap materials, one of the most popular is alligator leather, which can be adjusted to fit snugly and comfortably on anyone’s wrist.

Can I Change the Bracelet on My IWC Portofino Watch?

In short, yes, you can change the bracelet on your IWC Portofino watch, and doing so is simple and straightforward, thanks to the IWC EasX-CHANGE® system.

First introduced for IWC Pilot’s watches, the EasX-CHANGE® system makes switching up your style easy and fun, allowing you to swap your bracelet to match your outfit, the occasion, or just your mood. When you purchase your Portofino timepiece, you will notice that it comes with a small tool for changing your bracelet. This tool allows you to shift a small level into the spring bar to remove it at the same time as your strap. From here, you can swap it out with your new bracelet, transforming your watch ready for any event. Please note that the EasX-CHANGE® system is not currently available on all models, so make sure to check the product specifications on your chosen model.

There are a variety of straps and bracelets to choose from, such as:

  • Alligator leather in a range of colours, from classic black to bright yellow.
  • TimberTexâ„¢ in shades from brown to blue.
  • Calfskin in interesting ombre shades, such as reds and violets.

Not all materials and colours are available with every timepiece, so please check IWC’s Strap Selector to find out which bracelets are available for your model.

What Is the Warranty Period for an IWC Watch?

IWC watches come with a 2-year international warranty covering manufacturing defects. By registering your watch through the My IWC program, you can extend the warranty by an additional 6 years, providing a total of 8 years of coverage.

If your IWC watch requires service during your warranty period, you can bring or send it in its original labelled box to either of our stores. Please note that you may be responsible for transportation costs, including postage, insurance, and packing materials. For added peace of mind, we recommend using certified delivery and insurance when sending your watch.

To ensure your service request is processed under the international limited warranty, your watch must be accompanied by the original warranty card or certificate. We will need to update this card, as only official IWC stockists are permitted to complete this warranty documentation.

The International Limited Warranty does not cover defects or damages caused by external factors such as loss, theft, natural disasters, or accidents. It also excludes damages resulting from misuse, negligence, or improper use, including knocks, dents, or alterations to the watch’s functionality. Additionally, services or repairs carried out by non-authorised parties, as well as the use of non-recommended components, void the warranty. Normal wear and tear, as well as watches with altered or illegible serial numbers, are also not covered. Finally, the warranty does not cover routine maintenance or minor inaccuracies that fall within industry tolerance.
