Blue Skies Ahead for IWC – The New Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 Watches

By Nina Scally

Prepare for blue skies as IWC Schaffhausen launches its new Pilot's Watch Chronograph 41 TOP GUN Miramar and Chronograph 41 watches. The launch marks the first time that IWC uses one of its Pantone colours in a steel model, while the other – the TOP GUN Miramar – extends on the “Colours of TOP GUN” concept.

There are pilot watches for everyday enthusiasts who admire aviation history and the often utilitarian aesthetic that cockpit instruments bring to the wrist; then there are IWC watches. The Schaffhausen-based manufacturer is a titan in the field of pilot watches and knows precisely what it takes to deck out the wrists of the world’s most elite fighter jet pilots. The brand has even nurtured a partnership with the US Navy's legendary Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor Program since 2007, developing wristwatches capable of withstanding the extreme conditions inside supersonic jets. Think about it. What must it take to make a watch so indispensable for life thousands of miles above ground level? What does it demand of the designers and the technicians behind such tools? Perhaps one easy way to explore the breadth and scope of IWC’s skills in such a craft is to shine a spotlight on the IWC Pilot’s Watch TOP GUN watch collection.

IWC: The Architects of Air-Time

Born from IWC’s partnership with the legendary US Navy Fighter Weapons School, TOP GUN watches are far from the ordinary. They are a declaration of defiance and are engineered for precision in the cockpit. They can withstand the G-forces and supersonic speeds of the cockpit environment, yet evoke stealthy aesthetics with their tough, scratch-resistant cases forged from coloured ceramics. The Mojave Desert (sand), crisp Lake Tahoe (white), stealthy black, and tactical Woodland (green) shades call to mind the colours of the desert and the uniforms worn by elite flyers by way of a revolutionary material that IWC calls Ceratanium® - a high-tech Zirconium Oxide ceramic blend.

Two designs, one bold silhouette. The 41mm Pilot’s Watch Chronograph from IWC is reimagined in both steel and ceramic - each model offering its own take on aviation heritage, material innovation, and refined wearability.

Indeed, IWC’s history in crafting expert tools for aviation is rich and marked by significant milestones. The first dedicated “Special Pilots Watch” was launched in 1936 and informally went by the name Mark IX, followed by the brand’s Big Pilot’s Watches of the 1940s. These large 55mm models were developed for the German Air Force, paving the way for the 1948 Mark 11 watch, which was designed for the British Air Force. These exceptional wristwatches were outfitted with superior anti-magnetic inner cases, setting benchmarks for military pilots’ watches worldwide.

TOP GUN – The Elite Aviator Tool

The birth of the IWC TOP GUN watch became a pivotal point in the brand’s history in crafting aviation tools for experts. IWC became the first and only brand to receive an official license from the US Military and was granted permission to bear the “TOP GUN” name on its watches. Eventually, this name merged with the Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Centre, NAWDC, and became renowned for training elite naval aviators in advanced air combat tactics. The first model boasted a complex double chronograph function with a split seconds feature that could measure two separate time intervals at the same time. What enabled the watch to stand out with such stealth and charisma, however, was its ceramic case and textile strap. These models weren’t the first to showcase this innovative, ultra-tough material, however. IWC began experimenting with ceramic watch cases back in 1985 when it released the inaugural Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar.

In 2012, IWC established TOP GUN as an independent series of its own with five new releases that solidified the recognisable design as a tactical tool for airborne missions. The models combined a large case size with complex features that put legibility, performance and precision at the forefront of their designs. The brand’s Ceratanium models, launched in 2012, combine the strength and lightness of titanium with the scratch resistance of ceramic. Yet, it was in 2019 and onwards that IWC began to push the boundaries in ceramic material even further, focusing on a range of distinct colours, such as the "Mojave Desert" (sand-coloured), the "Lake Tahoe" (white), and "Woodland" (dark green). This brings us up to present day and IWC’s launch of the new Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 Miramar, inspired by the instructor T-shirts worn at the original home of the US Navy's elite Strike Fighter Weapons School (TOP GUN) in San Diego.

The New Blue IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 Watches

Recognising the importance of colour, IWC Schaffhausen partnered up with the Pantone Colour Institute some years ago to create the coloured ceramic cases of its Pilot’s Watch range – a series inspired by the landscape where TOP GUN pilots train. The brand’s thoughtful use of colour has seen the watchmaker and the colour developers participate in an advertising campaign, where the shades produced as a result of this special partnership were featured on the sides of various buildings in New York, London, Berlin, and Shanghai, among others.

Now, in a powder baby blue, IWC releases the new Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 models in collaboration with Pantone, inspired by TOP GUN instructor tees that sit under their light suits. The colour not only appears in the TOP GUN version of the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 but also in the standard steel model, marking the first time the brand has used a Pantone colour for its steel watches. Whichever model you prefer, both are striking, nonetheless – the TOP GUN version being a limited edition of 1000 pieces and appealing to those who like the exclusivity of a limited production model.

IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 TOP GUN Miramar Full Ceramic reference IW389409

The ceramic Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 TOP GUN reference IW389409 represents a spellbinding evolution of the brand’s voyage in coloured ceramic manufacture. The rugged, high-performance essence of the TOP GUN line is perfectly distilled in this special limited edition watch of 1000 pieces. The manufacturer blends the sky blue ceramic case with titanium elements to achieve a lightweight finish on the wrist. Notably, the model extends the 41mm diameter to 41.9mm, respecting the Pilot’s Watch DNA and tethering the wrist to the world of elite fighter jet pilots. The new watch exists somewhere between the dark blue of IWC’s “Oceana” and the white of the “Lake Tahoe”. It takes residence on the wrist with a depth of 15.5mm and features a solid, screwed-in caseback with a soft iron inner shield that offers the movement exceptional resistance against magnetism.

Like the steel model, the TOP GUN Miramar watch is powered by a version of the in-house developed self-winding 69000 Calibre family. The Calibre 69380 is a column wheel chronograph movement that beats at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour and stores a total of 46 hours of power reserve. It propels a set of Super-LumiNova-coated hands around the dial, trimmed in blue to match the hues of its beautiful bluedial and surrounding ceramic case. The Arabic numerals around the hour track are also treated with luminous material, fringed by a minute track and the familiar pilot-oriented triangle at 12 o’clock. At the 3 o’clock location is a day-date complication, balanced by a 12-hour totalizer at 9 o’clock. The northern and southern hemispheres of the dial are occupied by the 30-minute and small running seconds functions, respectively.

Notably softer and tamer in colour, these new Miramar wristwatches are less military vibe-inspired, but still use the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 as a base for their design. They carry a name that, once translated, means “Sea View”. Reminiscent of the horizon line seen from the cockpit flying over the ocean, the light blue colour is a match made in heaven for the steel Pilot’s Watch’s 41mm diameter (the company’s smaller diameter chronograph). The model sits at a height of 14.5mm and offers a display caseback crafted from sapphire crystal, secured against drops in air pressure, which affords a view of the movement from within. Meanwhile, the steel case is water-resistant to 100 meters and will make for a more manageable option for those who can’t afford to lose any more real estate on the wrist (this model measures a strict 41mm). Curiously, however, it measures longer in its lug-to-lug proportions on paper, stretching to a length from top to bottom of 51.8mm, but is designed to wear more compact on the wrist than its ceramic counterpart.

This steel version only features blue colour on the dial and strap. IWC’s innovative EasX-Change system on both models will allow you to experiment with different strap options, should you prefer something a little less sporty than the blue rubber strap that they already come with. IWC experts outfit the straps with a pin-style buckle engraved with the IWC logo, and the quick-change strap system will require no tools to alternate the rubber band with something dressier or more classic.

The IW388117’s pale blue dial brings a subtle, contemporary twist to IWC’s iconic pilot watch design - elegant, restrained, and effortlessly wearable.

Unlike most other IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronographs, this model forgoes the striking red accent on the running seconds hand. Instead, designers adorn this dial with a polished handset, giving the chronograph a more elevated feel. Instead of the blue outline seen in the ceramic iteration, these hands are rhodium-plated and are propelled by the Calibre 69385 – an automatic column wheel chronograph movement with a 46-hour power reserve.

Final Thoughts

The new IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 and TOP GUN Miramar watches certainly tap into a fun domain. While the steel iteration will align with collectors that share a taste for the more classic pilot watches from IWC Schaffhausen’s catalogue, the ceramic TOP GUN iteration will resonate with those fascinated by IWC’s capabilities in the realm of coloured ceramic technology.

This design is where Pantone really excels, enabling IWC the chance to demonstrate unique ergonomics fused with fighter jet pilot functionality. When we see options like this coming from such an esteemed watch manufacturer, it reminds us to take a deeper look into the company’s offerings to see what else it has to offer across its other collections.

While the limited edition TOP GUN Miramar will no doubt be in high demand, the steel version encompassing this entrancing pale blue colour is ideal for those who missed the boat on these 1000 pieces, or those who prefer the rugged elegance of the conventional steel sports watch. If IWC’s combination of tactical heritage and modern sophistication is too hard to resist, don’t risk missing out on the new Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 TOP GUN Miramar watch reference IW389409 or the steel Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 reference IW388117.
